Establishing a will is one of the greatest acts of stewardship a Christian can make in their lifetime. And yet, many find themselves without one. According to a 2024 study conducted by Caring.com, only 32% of Americans have a will in place.
6 Reasons Why People Don't Have a Will
Let’s explore some of the common reasons behind this significant statistic.
Reason 1: Procrastination
We’ve all struggled with procrastinating at least once in our lives. Whether it’s procrastinating scheduling a doctor’s appointment or starting on your taxes, it’s something we’ve all done at some point in our lives. Procrastination is one of the primary reasons people delay creating a will. These individuals acknowledge the importance of having a will but put it off, assuming they’ll have time to do it later. This tendency to delay can even be influenced by the discomfort associated with contemplating one’s mortality.
Reason 2: Perceived Lack of Assets
It’s a common misconception. Many believe that it’s only those who have substantial wealth who need a will. Since 2023, Caring.com reports that 14% more U.S. adults give a “lack of assets” as their reason for neglecting estate planning. Many people believe they don’t have enough assets to justify the effort, not realizing that a will is about more than just financial wealth. It includes other items including personal belongings, digital assets, and specifies guardianship for minors.
Reason 3: Lack of Knowledge
Creating a will can seem daunting, especially for those who are unfamiliar with the process. Many don’t know where to start or what steps to take, which leads to inaction. This lack of knowledge can be a significant barrier to getting a will in place.
Reason 4: Perceived Expense
The belief that drafting a will be a big expense prevents many from acting. While hiring a lawyer can be costly, there are more affordable options available, such as online will-making services. Yet, the perception of high costs often discourages people from exploring these alternatives. If you find yourself putting off your will due to perceived expense, know there are options out there for you. In June, Provision launched an online will-making platform that is free to all NC Baptists.
Reason 5: No One to Leave Assets to
Another common reason some individuals feel that they don’t need a will is because they have no one to leave their assets to. This might be the case for those without close family or friends. However, a will can still be crucial for directing how remaining assets are managed, including charitable donations (designated to churches, charities, or other organizations) or designating an executor for personal affairs.
Reason 6: Perceived Complexity and Time Investment
The process of creating a will can seem complicated and time-consuming, deterring many from even taking the first steps. This perceived complexity, along with the misconception that it requires a significant time commitment, often leads people to postpone completing a will.
An Important Step of Christian Stewardship
Understanding these common reasons can help address the barriers preventing many from creating a will. Whether through increasing awareness of the necessity of a will, providing more accessible resources, or dispelling myths about cost and complexity, it’s essential to encourage more people to take this important step of Christian stewardship for their future.
